Troubleshooting common errors
What the frequent import failures mean and how to fix the rows that caused them.
When an import reports failures, open the results workbook: every failed row carries the reason next to it. These are the ones people hit most.
"Handle has already been taken"
You used NEW on a product that already exists. Switch the Command to MERGE, or change the handle if you really want a second product.
"Path has already been taken" (redirects)
A redirect for that path exists. Use MERGE so the existing redirect is updated instead of a duplicate being created.
Products import without their options
A variant row needs its option name and value columns filled in. If a product genuinely has no options, leave those columns empty on a single row and it will be created with a default variant.
Customers are skipped
Customers match on email. A row with no email address cannot be matched or created.
The file is too large to open
Re-export with filters and only the columns you need. A file of 60 columns × 200,000 rows is hard on any spreadsheet program, and rarely necessary for a change you can express in three columns.
